“Tish was in my arms all night, we’d surely have felt each other getting up.” Violet said, and Tish nodded assertively.

“Julie, we were cuddled together the whole night too, right?” Emily’s expression changed to a pleading one. “S-so it can’t be you? I mean, Hyacinth was spooning me so I don’t know but I- it has to be B-Bridget, right?”

Bridget looked very frightened. “Emily, please, it’s not me. You have to believe me. Fiona, back me up here!”

Fiona shook her head. “Sorry Bridget. You could have been in and out fifty times and I sleep so deeply I wouldn’t know.”

Bridget stepped backwards into a corner, looking around for sympathy but finding none. Violet and Julie hemmed her in and grasped her firmly by the arms, pushing her into Violet’s room, which they locked from the outside.

“There.” Tish breathed. “There we go.”

“Wait.” Emily ventured. “Not that I’m saying it’s not Bridget, but what’s the timeline for when people woke up today? Like, who woke up first and then second, etc.? I just realised I woke up last, which probably meant that Julie did get out of bed without me noticing. Sorry Julie, I just… I just want to make absolutely sure.”

“I woke up before Bridget.” Fiona said.

“Violet and I woke up at the same time.” Tish contributed. “And before anyone else, though not by much.”

Julie looked mournfully at Emily. “Is it jail for me too then, Em? You’re the boss here I guess, since you’re the only one we can trust not to act in pred interest.”

Emily shut her eyes. “I-I don’t know. I mean, Julie, why didn’t you wake me up when you realized Hyacinth was gone? Did the girls come to the door to let you know?”

“I…” Julie stammered. “I didn’t want to make noise by waking you up. I thought maybe I could catch Hyacinth in the act, or the pred eating her, or something. But when I got out here everyone was already on the landing so I went back to wake you up.”

“That did happen.” Violet said, and Tish and Fiona nodded.

“Ok.” Emily nodded. “I trust you. Let’s just keep Bridget in there and see if it all stops, okay? I really hope it’s her, but I just don’t know. I can’t believe this is even happening. To be a predator like this you have to be sadistic, right? Even more sadistic than normal.”

“Okay.” Julie relaxed.

“Well.” Violet looked forward the bathroom. “I hate to say this, but… we can’t leave those three in there. We need to use the bathroom ourselves.”

“The ground will be too hard now to bury them.” Julie mused. “But if we do it a little at a time we could probably flush them.”

“Tish and I will do that.” Violet said curtly.
